A man from County Monaghan has been ordered by the High Court to face extradition to the United Kingdom on manslaughter and conspiracy charges relating to the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants found in a lorry container in Essex in October 2019. Justice Paul Burns rejected arguments that the alleged offences occurred outside UK jurisdiction and ordered the surrender of Ronan Hughes, aged 40, from Tyholland, to take effect from 15 June 2020. Hughes is suspected of being the ringleader of an organised crime group involved in human trafficking. He faces 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. The bodies of eight women and 31 men were discovered in an industrial park in Grays on 23 October 2019. The judge determined that the deaths occurred after the container entered UK territorial waters, establishing jurisdiction for the charges. Hughes' legal team had argued the offences were extraterritorial, but the court found this submission fundamentally misconceived. Hughes expressed willingness to be surrendered immediately.
