A Monaghan haulier alleged to be the principal organiser of a human trafficking operation has been refused bail by the High Court pending extradition proceedings. The man, aged 40 and from Tyholland, County Monaghan, faces 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration relating to migrants found dead in a lorry container in Essex last year. Mr Justice Paul Burns determined there was a probable risk of absconding, citing the accused's international haulage business, extensive European contacts, knowledge of ports, and access to considerable funds. The judge noted no conditions could adequately mitigate these concerns. Evidence presented included €200,000 frozen across multiple bank accounts and seizure of a vehicle valued at €108,000 by the Criminal Assets Bureau. The case was remanded to 15 May for a full extradition hearing. The accused appeared via video link from Cloverhill Prison.
