A Monaghan man appeared before the High Court on bail application following his arrest on a European Arrest Warrant in connection with the deaths of 39 migrants discovered in an Essex lorry container in October 2019. The accused is alleged to be the chief organiser of a criminal trafficking group and faces 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration in the United Kingdom. A detective sergeant presented evidence that the accused allegedly organised travel, paid for migrants' passage, and controlled drivers involved in the operation. The court heard that €200,000 has been frozen across 33 bank accounts linked to the accused and his family, and a BMW X5 valued at €108,000 was seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau. The accused, appearing via video-link from custody, offered to surrender his passport and comply with reporting conditions if released. Mr Justice Paul Burns reserved judgment on the bail application, with a decision scheduled for the following morning.
