A 40-year-old man from Tyholland, County Monaghan, appeared before the High Court in Dublin on charges arising from a migrant trafficking tragedy in Essex. Ronan Hughes is wanted by United Kingdom authorities to face 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. He was arrested yesterday evening in County Monaghan following the endorsement of a European Arrest Warrant. Mr Justice Paul Burns was told that Hughes is alleged to have recruited individuals involved in transporting 39 migrants who died in a sealed lorry container in Essex last October. The court heard the victims, comprising eight women and 31 men including two boys aged 15, died from oxygen starvation. Hughes was remanded in custody, with a provisional bail hearing scheduled for 29 April and a full extradition hearing fixed for 1 May. His younger brother Christopher remains wanted in connection with the investigation. A second man arrested on related charges has already admitted 39 counts of manslaughter.
