"This was done for money, nothing else": garda murdered for base motive, prosecution tell jury

A man has pleaded not guilty to the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe at the Central Criminal Court. The garda was shot during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union in County Louth on January 25th, 2013. The prosecution opening told the jury the killing occurred during a planned, organised operation targeting a credit union employee carrying tens of thousands of euro. The accused, from County Armagh, is also charged with robbing approximately seven thousand euro in cash and cheques on the same date and location. The prosecution case relies on circumstantial evidence, including mobile phone and CCTV records, and will argue the accused had financial pressures at the time. The court heard the accused subsequently relocated to New York. The trial, heard before Mr Justice Michael White and a jury, continues.
