NI man caught with child abuse imagery on phone avoids jail

A man from County Down pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of child sexual abuse material discovered on his mobile phone. The 33-year-old, of Mayobridge, Newry, attended Garda Store Street station voluntarily on 27 August 2015 and surrendered two phones for analysis. Three images were recovered, including depictions of child sexual abuse. The court heard the images had come to the accused's phone through an online conversation and that there were no aggravating factors such as distribution, commercial purpose, or prior convictions. The defendant had engaged with therapeutic support. Judge Martin Nolan imposed a one-year sentence, suspended in full, having regard to the absence of aggravating circumstances and evidence of the accused's own rehabilitation efforts.
