A 35-year-old man from Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan has been sentenced to six years imprisonment following his conviction for serious offences against his former partner. Derek Fay pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm and false imprisonment at a hotel in Parkwest, Dublin on 16 and 17 November 2015. The court heard that Fay trapped the woman in a hotel room overnight, during which he made violent threats, destroyed her mobile telephone and punched her repeatedly in the face, causing a serious injury to her nose. The woman remained awake throughout most of the night in fear for her safety. Fay subsequently left the jurisdiction and was returned to Ireland on foot of a European Arrest Warrant. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the custodial sentence, describing the accused's conduct as prolonged and vicious. The sentence was backdated to January 2018, when Fay first entered custody in connection with the matter.
