Developer concerned about delays to €60m wind farm project

Two judicial review challenges against An Bord Pleanála's approval of a wind farm development have been admitted to the High Court's fast-track commercial list. The North Westmeath Turbine Action Group and environmental campaigner Peter Sweetman have challenged the board's decision to permit Coole Windfarm Ltd to construct a thirteen-turbine facility with blade tips reaching 175 metres on peatlands near Coole in County Westmeath, close to the Longford border. Both applicants contend the March decision conflicts with EU environmental and habitats directives and seek an order quashing the permission. Justice Robert Haughton granted admission to the expedited list following an unopposed application by the developer, which cited concerns regarding project delays. The company estimates the €60 million scheme will generate construction employment and contribute to Ireland's EU emissions commitments. The case has been adjourned to February and is expected to require six to eight days of hearing.
