Inquiry finds obstetrician guilty of one count of poor professional performance

A Medical Council inquiry has found obstetrician Dr Salah Aziz Ahmed guilty of one count of poor professional performance relating to his care of a patient at Cavan General Hospital. The committee determined that Dr Aziz failed to decide that immediate delivery by emergency caesarean section was required in April 2014. The inquiry, which began in November 2016 and concluded after 25 days of hearings, examined Dr Aziz's care of three women treated between 2012 and 2014. Of fourteen allegations against him, seven were proven as fact. However, he was found not guilty of poor professional performance on six additional counts and cleared of professional misconduct on two counts. The Medical Council will determine sanctions at a later date. Dr Aziz's legal counsel argued that the finding should attract a sanction at the lower end of the scale, noting no evidence suggested a different delivery timing would have altered the outcome.
