A man from County Mayo has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment, with the final two years suspended, following his conviction for rape at the Central Criminal Court. The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to raping a woman on 16 May 2015 in a Mayo town. The court heard that the man threw his victim across a laneway to avoid detection by a CCTV camera before sexually assaulting her. He threatened the woman with a blade and made threats of violence afterwards. The victim sustained facial bruising and whiplash injuries. She reported the incident to gardaí shortly after the attack. In her victim impact statement, the woman expressed her fear for her life during the assault. The defendant was ordered to have no contact with the victim and must remain at least 100 metres away from her.
