A man from Letterkenny, Co Donegal, has been jailed for 12 months following conviction on a charge of sexually exploiting a child. Donnchadh McGinley, then aged 34, met a 15-year-old girl through a youth mental health messaging application in late 2014. The pair subsequently met on several occasions before McGinley invited the teenager to an apartment in Dublin in January 2015. During that visit, they watched a film together before engaging in sexual activity in the bedroom. McGinley attempted sexual intercourse but the girl was unable to proceed due to fear and physical discomfort. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, McGinley, now 36, pleaded guilty to one count of sexually exploiting a child between January 3 and 4, 2015, with a second count of meeting a child for exploitation purposes taken into account. Judge Melanie Greally imposed the 12-month custodial sentence, noting the activity was age-inappropriate but that no evidence suggested predatory intent. She considered McGinley's guilty plea, remorse, personal difficulties at the time, and absence of previous convictions.
