A 34-year-old Mauritian man has been sentenced to two months in custody at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following his guilty plea to three counts of deception. Resen Modeley facilitated marriages of convenience between Irish residents and European Union nationals, charging €7,000 per arrangement. He admitted to securing false employment letters submitted with three separate intention-to-marry applications filed with civil registrars in Monaghan, Dublin, and Naas in May 2015. Judge Pauline Codd suspended the remainder of a two-year sentence on condition that Modeley depart Ireland upon release and remain outside the country for five years. A deportation order was granted. The investigation, initiated following the discovery of the bogus marriages, led gardaí to arrest Modeley at his home in November 2015. He cooperated during questioning and was assessed as having no entitlement to remain in the jurisdiction.
