Polish man who dropped television on murder victim's head is jailed for life

At the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on 5 July 2016, Krzystof Grzegorski, aged 22, was found guilty of the murder of Bogdan Michalkiewicz, 41, at Westside Apartments, Letterkenny, County Donegal on 13 May 2013. Grzegorski had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but the prosecution rejected the plea. The jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict following five hours of deliberation. Justice Patrick McCarthy imposed the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment, backdated to 26 May 2014. The prosecution established that Grzegorski inflicted 46 wounds to the victim's head and face, along with 17 stab wounds to the abdomen, and dropped a television on the victim's head. Pathologist evidence indicated the victim sustained severe injuries including nine stab wounds to the tongue and defensive injuries, indicating he endured significant suffering. A second defendant, Dariusz Weckowicz, 51, was acquitted by direction of the trial judge, having been present at the scene but not proven to have participated in the attack.
