Uncle who raped his niece is jailed

A man from Cavan has received a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence following his conviction for the rape of his teenage niece in the mid-1990s. The Central Criminal Court heard that the offences occurred in early 1997 when the victim was sixteen years old. The accused, now 49, pleaded guilty to rape, oral rape, and sexual assault committed at locations in County Cavan. During the proceedings, the victim described how her world collapsed when her parents separated and her uncle exploited her vulnerability by providing alcohol before abusing her. The court noted the defendant held a position of trust and that the victim suffered considerable trauma. Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy acknowledged the guilty plea and low risk of reoffending but emphasised the gravity of the offences. The sentence includes three years post-release supervision. The victim did not initially report the abuse to gardaí but came forward in 2011, describing her determination to prevent further harm.
