A man from Mayo has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment following his conviction at the Central Criminal Court on 23 counts of rape and sexual assault of his daughter. The offences, committed between 2008 and 2012, occurred when the victim was aged seven to eleven years old. The abuse came to light after the child disclosed details to a schoolmate, prompting intervention by school staff, the HSE, and An Garda Síochána. The defendant maintained his innocence throughout the trial despite evidence contradicting his account. Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy noted the lasting impact on the victim, who continues to experience significant psychological harm. In her victim impact statement, the young woman described the profound effect the abuse and subsequent court proceedings have had on her wellbeing and relationships. The convicted man has been placed on the sex offenders register as part of his sentence.
