A 31-year-old man from Wexford pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to theft following an extortion scheme targeting an elderly sex offender. The defendant and an associate posed as journalists, threatening to publish photographs in national and local newspapers unless the victim paid €10,000. The victim, an 82-year-old former school principal and Cavan native, initially handed over €1,000 during a house visit where the defendant also displayed surveillance footage. A youth accompanying the defendant stole an additional €500 from the victim's bedroom. The victim reported the threats to gardaí, who conducted a sting operation and arrested the defendant when he returned to collect further money. Judge Desmond Hogan described the offence as "particularly mean" and noted the operation involved surveillance and videoing. The case was adjourned to July 17 for probation assessment regarding suitability for the Restorative Justice Programme. The judge indicated a prison sentence remained possible but has not ruled out alternative disposals.
