Suspended sentence for former apprentice butcher who stole over €49k in "throes of drug-induced paranoia"

A former apprentice butcher has received a suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following his guilty plea to theft from his employer. The 22-year-old man stole €49,204 from McArdle Meats at Charlestown Shopping Centre in Finglas on Christmas Eve 2013. He was able to access the safe using codes known to him from his employment. Judge Desmond Hogan suspended a four-year prison sentence for three years, conditional on the man keeping the peace and completing 240 hours of community service. Gardaí recovered €22,000 of the stolen funds, with the remainder handed to a third party who subsequently threatened the defendant. The court heard the man was suffering from cocaine addiction at the time and had no previous convictions. The judge accepted he had demonstrated genuine remorse and made significant progress towards rehabilitation.
