A 44-year-old man from County Carlow has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of his two young sons in County Mayo in July 2013. Sanjeev Chada pleaded guilty to strangling the children, whose bodies were discovered in his vehicle after it crashed near Westport. Mr Justice Paul Carney imposed two mandatory life sentences to run concurrently, backdated to July 31, 2013. The court heard that Chada had accumulated substantial gambling debts through stock market trading and had misappropriated community funds. The children's mother delivered a victim impact statement describing the devastation caused by the killings. A psychiatric report indicated Chada experienced psychological conflict between his self-image as a family man and his secret financial difficulties, though this did not meet the threshold for an insanity defence. Chada remains in custody on suicide watch.
