A trial began at the Central Criminal Court concerning the death of a 20-year-old man shot in County Kildare in April 2013. Three men aged 21 were arraigned: one pleaded not guilty to murder and to possession of a sawn-off shotgun with intent to endanger life, though he admitted guilty to possession of the firearm in suspicious circumstances. The other two defendants pleaded not guilty to murder and to related firearms charges. During garda interviews, the first accused claimed the deceased, described as his best friend, had threatened him over missing cannabis and had made threats against his family. He stated he fired at the victim's shoulder intending only to discharge a warning shot, and denied intent to kill. The prosecution contends the second and third accused participated in a joint enterprise. The trial, overseen by Mr Justice Garrett Sheehan, continues before a jury.
