Outcome: Judge O'Donnell sentenced Lyons to three-and-a-half years' imprisonment but suspended the final year. At the Court of Appeal today, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said the court had quashed the original sentence and would impose a jail term of four years on Lyons.

Outcome: In sentencing Lyons to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment, Judge Tom O'Donnell said the incident "smacked of vigilantism" that was "unacceptable in any civilised society". Ms Leech said Judge O'Donnell then suspended a further year of the sentence to enable rehabilitation and to take into account Lyons' personal circumstances.; Mr Justice Edwards then adjourned the matter to 10.15am on March 28 for re-sentencing.
