A man convicted of dangerous driving causing death has been returned to prison following a successful appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Court of Criminal Appeal. Kevin McArdle, aged 31, of Longfield, Carrickmacross, was originally sentenced to four years with one year suspended by Monaghan Circuit Court in October 2011. The appellate court found the sentence unduly lenient. McArdle was driving with almost three-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit on December 27th, 2010, when his BMW collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Stephen Connolly on the Carrickmacross to Ardee road. The collision resulted in the deaths of Mr Connolly's wife, their unborn child, and two passengers in McArdle's vehicle. The Court of Criminal Appeal substituted the original sentence with six years imprisonment, with the final two years suspended. McArdle was also disqualified from driving for twelve years and ordered to serve a further one year in custody from the date of judgment.

Sean Lynch (26) is alleged to have assaulted a person by sticking a lit cigarette in their eye at Home Nightclub in Balbriggan on July 31, 2011. He was remanded on continuing bail, and the case was adjourned until March 27th. Billy Atete (44) pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath sample at Balbriggan Garda Station on February 2. He was fined €250 and disqualified from driving for four years.

Balbriggan Sunday Market was an applicant in a case involving possession of counterfeit cigarettes for sale without excise duty and refusal to give a blood sample, with charges admitted and a guilty plea.
Patrick McDonagh, 50, of Dundalk, was sentenced by the Special Criminal Court to five years' imprisonment for unlawful possession of a .32‑calibre Baikal semi‑automatic pistol. He pleaded guilty to the offence on 10 June 2013, when the weapon was found in the boot of a black Volkswagen in Castlebellingham. McDonagh was also charged with membership of an unlawful organisation, the IRA, but the DPP entered a nolle prosequi and the charge was not pursued. Liam Kinahan, 30, an engineering student from Dromiskin Cross, Co. Louth, was convicted and fined at Swords District Court for causing €2,000 worth of damage to his ex‑girlfriend's 2012 Volkswagen Golf. On 5 January, outside The Gallery Apartments in Donabate, Kinahan called to his ex‑girlfriend's apartment, was refused entry, shouted, and then kicked the car, damaging both wing mirrors, denting a door and the car booth. He admitted the damage, paid €2,000 to cover the costs, and pleaded guilty. Sergeant Bob Kavanagh gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution. The ex‑girlfriend had asked the Gardaí to withdraw the charges. Kinahan, with no prior convictions, apologized, citing drunkenness and anger. A 34-year-old businessman from Armagh has been charged in connection with an alleged diesel laundering operation worth approximately €9 million annually. The man, a company director with an address in Crossmaglen, was arrested by appointment in Dublin and charged under the Finance Act in relation to an alleged incident at Castleblayney, County Monaghan, in September 2011. Gardaí alleged he was found red-handed at a yard during surveillance, with large quantities of green diesel and laundering equipment present. In Drogheda, 30‑year‑old Wayne McQuillan was stabbed to death on New Year's Day, with the attack occurring near Rathmullen Park at about 1.30 am. Graham Dwyer, a 41‑year‑old architect from Cork living in Foxrock, has been charged with the murder of 37‑year‑old childcare worker Elaine O'Hara, whose decomposed body was found in the Dublin mountains. The court heard that Gardaí have taken over 300 statements and collected more than 800 exhibits. Dwyer was remanded in custody for another four weeks after the judge confirmed he was entitled to free legal aid. A 46‑year‑old Polish welder and mechanic, Waldemar Solowiow, was found guilty of murdering his 37‑year‑old girlfriend, Mary Ryan, who was discovered unconscious in his Dublin bedsit on 18 May 2012. Ryan died from neck compression and blunt force trauma to the head. Solowiow pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter, claiming a physical fight the night before and that he did not intend to kill her. The Court of Criminal Appeal has found that a four-year sentence imposed on a man convicted of dangerous driving causing death was unduly lenient. Kevin McArdle, aged 31, of Longfield, Carrickmacross, was originally sentenced at Monaghan Circuit Criminal Court in October 2011 following a collision on the Carrickmacross to Ardee road on 27 December 2010. Three people died in the incident: Stephen Connolly's wife, their unborn child, and two passengers in McArdle's vehicle. The court heard McArdle had consumed almost three-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit and was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time. Mr Justice Donal O'Donnell rejected characterisations of the incident as a momentary lapse, describing it instead as an utterly predictable consequence of excessive drinking.
