Jail for man who twice attacked ex-partner in four days
Summary
John Paul Gantley, 36, of The Coombe, Dublin, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of assault causing harm that occurred on 20 and 24 May 2017. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, with the final 12 months suspended for a two‑year period during which he may not contact his former partner. He will be supervised by the Probation Service for 12 months. Garda Gary Burke described how, on 20 May, Gantley texted his ex‑partner, arrived at her house, pinned her against a wall, held her by the throat, struck her face and brandished a kitchen knife, cutting her forearm. On 24 May he again went to her house, followed her onto the street, struck her face with a hand while holding a sharp object, cutting her face. The victim's impact statement said she was "always on the edge of fear of John Paul" and "fearful of the day he is released".
