On-the-run grandmother busted after returning to Ireland having lost memory in car accident
Summary
Verka Georgieva, 49, was convicted in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of stealing €10,000 from a businessman in 2008 and attempting to steal a similar amount from a medical student in 2017. She had previously been charged with the 2008 offence and taken a bench warrant, but returned to Ireland after a 2014 car accident that caused memory loss. Garda Alan O'Dowd described how Georgieva stole the businessman's cash from his pocket as he left Allied Irish Bank, and how she followed the student to Brown Thomas after watching her deposit the money into her bag. CCTV footage showed Georgieva in the bank's security hatch with the businessman, and she was arrested shortly after the student alerted security. Georgieva pleaded guilty to both thefts and was sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment, with the court noting the crimes were committed in "cold blood.".
