Summary
Edward Boylan Jnr, aged 31 and without a fixed abode, was found not guilty of murdering his father, Edward Boylan Snr, 74, by reason of insanity. The Central Criminal Court heard that Boylan Jnr had been diagnosed with schizophrenia over a decade earlier and had been a 'special needs' prisoner in Mountjoy Prison while serving a sentence for a minor offence. He was in a special wing with supervision, but prison medics noted he was hearing voices. Boylan Jnr claimed he was denied medication and was released the morning before the killing without appropriate supervision, medication or housing. He was in a manic, psychotic state at the time of the murder. The jury reached the verdict in 14 minutes. Boylan Jnr was committed to the Central Mental Hospital for treatment and a report by Dr O'Connell confirmed his mental illness. The court ordered his continued detention for treatment to prevent future unpredictable behaviour.
