Worker who injured wrist in fall awarded €32k in damages

Summary

In 2011, 26‑year‑old Stacy Lennon slipped on a wet floor in a disabled toilet at the Fun Fitness Total Fitness Complex in Sandyford, Dublin, and landed heavily on her left hand. She was told by her manager to turn off a hand‑dryer power switch, after which she fell. Lennon sued her former employer, Fun Fitness Ltd, alleging negligence and breach of duty for allowing the floor to be wet and failing to provide a safe system of work. The case was heard only for damages; the company had since gone into liquidation and its defence was struck out. Mr Justice Anthony Barr found that Lennon suffered carpal tunnel syndrome in her left wrist, a condition caused by the fall, and that the injury severely limited her employment prospects. He awarded her €32,000 in damages plus costs. The judgment was made in default of the defendant's appearance.
