Appeal court gives views on prosecution's obligations at sentencing

Outcome: Kieran Ryan (29) successfully appealed against the severity of the eight-year sentence imposed on him for the possession of a handgun and ammunition. In its judgement on Ryan, Mr O'Malley said the appeal court gave guidance as to certain sentence ranges it considered appropriate for firearms offences and certain general factors which could be taken in to account when locating these offences on the scale of seriousness.
