An actor who appeared on the crime drama series Love/Hate has been jailed for four years for a violent attempt to rob a café and for carrying out a later robbery of a convenience store while covered in blood. Leroy Harris (32) was stopped by gardaí and arrested for his own safety after being spotted in Dublin city with bloodstained hands. It was later discovered that he had just robbed a convenience store using a broken pint glass. Earlier that evening, Harris had attempted to rob a café by squeezing under the shutters and swinging a wine bottle at the owner, who managed to push him out. Harris pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery of the Flower and Bean Café and to the robbery of Day Today' convenience store. Garda Aidan Doyle stated that Harris told the café owner it was a robbery before swinging the bottle at him. The owner, who was with his wife and child at the time, was concerned for their safety and noted that Harris appeared intoxicated.
A now 28-year-old man who sexually assaulted a teenage girl during a sleepover has been jailed for four years and three months. The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, sexually assaulted the then 14-year-old by intimately touching her when she was having a sleepover at a friend's home where he was subletting a room. The defendant, who was then 26 years old, was the only adult in the house at the time and provided alcohol to some of the girls. He was extradited to Ireland after fleeing to Romania. Detective Garda Rebecca Doyle told the court that one of the girls was sick, and two of the victim's friends were taking care of her in an upstairs bathroom, leaving the victim alone with the defendant in a bedroom. The defendant sexually molested the victim, and her friends came in to get her away from him. The victim immediately told her friends what had happened. The defendant denied any sexual contact and told gardai that the girls were making it all up.
Stephen Crosbie (44) was jailed for five and a half years after attacking a fellow homeless services user with a knife and hatchet during an incident of 'harrowing violence' in Peter McVerry House in Dublin last year. The victim suffered severe injuries, including a laceration to his head and a punctured kidney. Staff members tried to de-escalate the situation, but Crosbie threatened them as well. When armed gardai arrived, they found blood spatters along the corridor. The victim required emergency surgery. Crosbie had 120 previous convictions and was on bail for another offence at the time of the attack. A father who assaulted an umpire at an underage GAA match, leading to the victim suffering a concussion at the hands of others, has been given a three-month suspended sentence. The actions of the defendant Michael Kelly – who has 20 previous convictions – at Clan na Gael club in March 2023 were 'not a true reflection of the GAA', Judge Orla Crowe said as she sentenced him today. The court was previously told how there were already tensions on the pitch during the match when Kelly ran at an umpire 'swinging punches' after his 17-year-old son got into a verbal disagreement with the victim. Kelly (41) of Sherrard St Lower, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty to assault at the GAA club in Irishtown on March 5, 2023. Kelly did not actually strike the umpire, Paul Keane, but put him in fear that he would be hit, which allows for a charge of assault under Section 2 of the Non-fatal Offences against the Person Act. It is an offence which carries a maximum sentence of six months.

Lee Hyland, 40, of Millrose Estate, Bluebell, Dublin, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to endangerment and dangerous driving. The court heard that gardaí carried out a controlled delivery of a parcel intercepted by customs, which contained 11kg of cannabis valued at €211,910. Onwukaike signed for the parcel and was arrested, indicating he was paid €1,000 to collect it. Judge Elma Sheahan noted the offence carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, but departed from this in exceptional circumstances. Considering his guilty plea, lack of prior drug convictions, family circumstances involving a child with complex needs, and remorse, the judge set a headline sentence of five years. She imposed a sentence of three years imprisonment, suspending the final six months on strict conditions. Onwukaike, who has two previous road traffic convictions, was jailed for two and a half years.

These conditions require Peyton to make a €1,000 donation to Merchant's Quay within six months to assist those suffering with addiction difficulties. The judge noted she is at low risk of re-offending and considered her remorse and lack of previous convictions.

Brandon Abrahams (33) of Belvedere Place, Dublin 1, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for participating in a criminal organisation and committing nine related offences, including money laundering, possessing proceeds of crime, and possessing a false instrument. Abrahams admitted guilt to these charges, which occurred between 2022 and 2024. He was found to have benefited from an An Post smishing scam, in which €500,000 was stolen from about 30 accounts to benefit about 50 criminals. During a Garda raid in 2024, a laptop containing extensive personal debit card information was discovered. Abrahams was also involved in creating sophisticated fake documents, including UK driving licences and utility bills, which were used to set up accounts in financial institutions and sold to other fraudsters. A total of €147,230 passed through his accounts during the relevant period. Abrahams has 55 previous convictions, mainly for road traffic offences, theft, deception, drugs, and criminal damage. His co-accused, Kim Porter (31) of Casement Park, Finglas, Dublin 11, pleaded guilty to 10 related offences, including money laundering, deception, enhancing a criminal organisation, possession of cocaine, and making off from a hotel without paying for her stay. Evidence in her case was heard earlier this week and was adjourned to July for finalisation. Judge Martina Baxter noted concerns about Abrahams' assertions regarding his relationship with Porter and his claims of suffering from PTSD, gambling, and drug addiction, which she found lacking in evidence. She also highlighted his lack of honesty and high risk of re-offending. Abrahams' sentence was backdated to September 2024, with no portion suspended.
