A 69‑year‑old Cork pensioner was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment for raping and sexually abusing his step‑daughter between 1974 and 1979. The victim, now 53, gave birth to two of his children after being raped from the age of 11. She reported the abuse to Gardaí in 2013, after her father's death, when the defendant had moved in with her mother and siblings and later married her mother. The abuse included weekly sexual intercourse, rape in the garden shed, and a pregnancy at 15, which she concealed by claiming a work colleague was the father. The defendant had no employment and was an alcoholic. He pleaded guilty to 18 counts of rape and sexual abuse. Judge Tony Hunt imposed an 18‑year sentence, suspending the final six years; the defendant is currently serving a four‑year term for earlier indecent assault offences against the victim's siblings.
