Dublin man jailed for transporting pistol and silencer
Summary
Michael Hanney, 23, was sentenced to five years in prison for transporting a 9mm Makarov pistol, a silencer and three rounds of ammunition. He was caught in July 2015 after GardaĆ noticed him driving out of a gated residential area in Ballymun. The pistol was found in the passenger footwell of his vehicle. Hanney pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Martin Nolan accepted that Hanney was transporting the weapon and noted that he "obviously knew it was going to be used to kill, injure or at least threaten someone." The judge also acknowledged good references showing Hanney's willingness to work and his contribution to his family and community, and suspended the final two years of the sentence on strict conditions. Daniel Kavanagh, 25, was also jailed for five years for possession of the weapon, ammunition and silencer. The case was prosecuted by Martina Baxter BL.
