Romanian used DJ scam in burglary set-up

Summary

A 31‑year‑old Romanian man, Ovidiu Raducanu, pleaded guilty to burglary at Mountjoy Square on 6 September 2013. He had pretended to sell DJ equipment for €2,500 to lure a victim, who later discovered that the equipment was not present. Raducanu met the victim outside his home, called the victim to let him into the apartment, and then left. Two other men entered the apartment, held the victim hostage, and stole the €2,500. The victim was tied up, punched, and threatened with a knife but eventually freed himself and called the Gardaí. Raducanu admitted he had set up the victim, denied the offence initially, and claimed he had been threatened by the men. He brought €2,500 to court as a "practical expression of remorse." Judge Patricia Ryan adjourned sentencing to October to allow a probation report to be prepared. The case is pending sentencing.
