Dutch man fled to Rome after stabbing his flatmate
Summary
In December 2012, Dutch national Kamal El Habsati, aged 31, stabbed his flatmate Jacky Lumi to death in their Dublin apartment. El Habsati fled across Europe and later surrendered to police in Rome. He was repatriated to the Netherlands and banned from Italy for five years. The case is now before the Central Criminal Court, where El Habsati has pleaded not guilty to the murder. Detective Sergeant Patrick O'Toole testified that after discovering the body, he requested an Interpol alert for Lumi, who was in Rome. Lumi called to confirm the death and said El Habsati had admitted to stabbing him. The trial continues before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy, with a jury of seven men and five women to decide the outcome.
