"Highly trusted" member of Cork community is jailed for sexually abusing boys
Summary
In July 2016, a 69‑year‑old man, a trusted figure in Cork, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for sexually abusing two boys between January and May 1991. The younger victim, now 30, was five at the time and was lured into a camper van by the offender, who performed oral sex and masturbated him. The older victim, now 40, was 14 and was forced to steer the van while the offender ripped his trousers and molested him, causing the boy to lose control of the vehicle. Both victims described the offender as a trusted community member. Mr Justice Tony Hunt imposed consecutive terms of four years, citing the severity of the abuse and the victims' impact statements. The offender had 48 prior convictions and had been arrested in Portugal in 2014 after a European Arrest Warrant.
