Suspended sentence for man who fractured tourist's eye socket when refused cigarette

Summary

Sean McKevitt, aged 30, received a three‑year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting tourist Zoe Jackson in Temple Bar Square on 6 May 2013. McKevitt, who was homeless and on a methadone maintenance programme at the time, had been in a group listening to buskers when Jackson's boyfriend refused him a cigarette. McKevitt allegedly aimed a punch at the boyfriend, who moved, but the blow struck Jackson, fracturing her right eye socket and causing a laceration. She was hospitalized for five days and suffered temporary double vision. McKevitt had 117 prior convictions, mainly for public‑order offences. Judge Patricia Ryan, after hearing evidence of his recent housing and drug‑treatment progress, imposed the suspended sentence. The case was heard in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
