Summary
The 42‑year‑old accused of rape, assault and threats against his wife told Gardaí that "black magic" had been used on their relationship. He claimed he had been cursed in his native country by someone who wanted the marriage to end so he could marry that person's daughter. He pleaded not guilty to rape, assault causing harm and five counts of threatening to kill or cause serious harm between 24 May and 1 August 2014, and had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife with a hammer in August 2014. During Garda interviews he denied raping or threatening his wife, said he had shoved her once but denied head‑butting or telling her he would kill her, and admitted attacking her with a hammer outside her parents' home on a later date.
