€10 million Monet-basher jailed for having stolen antique books

Summary

Andrew Shannon, 51, was jailed for one year for possessing 57 stolen antique books, including a 1660 King James Bible, after a jury conviction in February. The books had been taken from Carton House library in Kildare in 2006 and were found in Shannon's home in March 2007. Shannon, who had previously been jailed for damaging a €10 million Monet painting, pleaded not guilty to the possession charge. Judge Petria McDonnell sentenced him to one year with the final six months suspended. He had denied the charge but was convicted. The books were valued at €6,500. Shannon's 35 other convictions include theft and burglary. He had appealed his earlier conviction for the Monet damage, but that appeal was still pending at the time of this article.
