Dublin man carried out €50k cash box robbery with fake gun

Summary

Trevor Cooke, aged 40, pleaded guilty to robbing a cash transit van at Bawnogue Post Office in Clondalkin on 3 October 2013. He entered the post office while two G4S security guards were dropping off cash, approached one guard and held an imitation firearm to his face, ordering him to hand over the cash box. Cooke seized the box, which contained €50,000, and fled in a car that had been reported stolen two weeks earlier. Gardaí pursued him, and after a traffic chase he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was arrested in the rear garden of a house, hiding behind a wheelie bin, and was sprayed with pepper spray before being taken into custody. A fake gun was recovered from the car, and the cash box was opened, releasing a dye that destroyed all the money. Cooke has 48 prior convictions and was already in custody for a previous burglary.
