Teen to be sentenced for string of violent crimes

Summary

Karl Smith, 19, will be sentenced in July for a series of violent offences committed over a month. He pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to a 21‑year‑old man, threatening to kill a 16‑year‑old boy, criminal damage to a front door and two counts of producing a weapon. On 30 May 2015 Smith broke into Devon Whiston's house, damaged the door, entered the kitchen, held a steak knife to Whiston and prevented the occupants from leaving. Two weeks later he bit Whiston's arm, stabbed him with a barbecue fork, beat him with a rolling pin and stole a TV, an X‑Box and a computer. On 15 June he returned to the house, repeated the assault and robbery. On 27 June he crashed a house party, held a knife to a 16‑year‑old's face, cut his cheek and threatened to kill him.
