"Significant fall from grace" for bank worker who stole from customers and friends

Summary

Owen Travers, a 61‑year‑old former assistant manager at AIB in Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to 15 counts of theft from seven customers, all of whom were also friends. He stole between €200 and €25,000, totalling over €127,000, but the actual loss to victims was just under €90,000 because he moved money between accounts. The thefts were uncovered in February 2012 when a customer noticed a large sum missing from her mother's account; she later discovered €10,000 had also been taken from her own company's account. Travers admitted the thefts to the victim, his boss, and to Gardaí, claiming he was dealing with alcoholism, depression, gambling debts and suicidal thoughts. He has no prior convictions, is now the primary homemaker for his wife and two children, and will never work in the financial sector again. The case was adjourned for sentencing on 11 July.
