In the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, four former senior bankers – Denis Casey, Peter Fitzpatrick, John Bowe and Willie McAteer – pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges for allegedly misleading investors through a €7.2 billion circular transaction scheme that aimed to strengthen Anglo Irish Bank's 2008 balance sheet. The alleged scheme involved financial transactions between March 1 and September 30, 2008. During the trial, former AIB Group Finance Director John O'Donnell testified that in early 2008 he attended a meeting with the Financial Regulator, who urged Irish banks to support each other's liquidity. O'Donnell recalled a golf game with Anglo's CFO Matt Moran, after which Moran approached him in a car park with a proposal for a deposit arrangement that would avoid appearing as an inter‑bank placement. O'Donnell said he later rejected the proposal and communicated this to Moran. The case is still before Judge Martin Nolan and a jury.
