14-year sentence for man who carried out "brutal" rape
Summary
In 2016 a 39‑year‑old man was jailed for 14 years, with the final year suspended, for raping a woman four times at his Laois home in July 2012. He was convicted of two counts of rape, two counts of anal rape and assault. The judge also imposed a three and a half year assault sentence, with six months suspended, all running concurrently. The victim, who was invited to help with painting, described being assaulted, threatened, forced into a shower, raped vaginally and anally, and then forced to wash herself before being taken to a friend's house. She reported the attack nine days later. The man denied the allegations in a garda interview and was later arrested on a European Arrest Warrant.
