Suspended sentence for man who was teen when he defiled young friend
Summary
A 21‑year‑old man was given a two‑and‑a‑half‑year suspended sentence for forcing a boy, who was 10 or 11 at the time, to have sex with him when the man was 15. The offence, committed in the man's Dublin home between January and July 2011, was found by a jury to be defilement. The man denied the charge. Judge Petria McDonnell described the act as a heinous assault on a much younger boy and noted the continuing impact on the victim, as confirmed by evidence and a victim impact statement. The judge suspended the entire sentence for two years. At the sentencing hearing in January, the accused had written to the judge that his sentence began the day he was accused of the crime, expressing fear of prison and suicidal thoughts. He also mentioned that he had to leave the country after being charged because neighbours had called him a paedo and rapist. The unnamed 21-year-old was convicted.
