In the Fairview robbery, Mantle approached the cashier, handed her a betting slip demanding money and threatened to squirt petrol in her face and set the shop on fire. He brandished a bottle of Fairy Liquid filled with petrol and told her, "I'm going to squirt this in your fucking face. I've a lighter and I'm going to set this place on fire." The victim, who feared she would be burned alive, handed over an unspecified sum before the panic button was sounded by a pregnant colleague. In the Spar incident, Mantle entered the store, demanded a bottle of spirits, and produced a syringe filled with dark blue liquid, threatening the worker. David Mantle pleaded guilty.
