Elderly man to be sentenced for sexual assault of intellectually disabled daughter
Summary
An elderly man, aged 75, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to sexually assaulting his intellectually disabled adult daughter, who was 34 at the time of the offence in 1999. The court heard that the man had called to her flat while drunk and, according to the victim, forced himself upon her, causing her physical and emotional trauma. He has a prior conviction for forgery in 1989. Defence counsel argued the incident was a single alcohol‑induced act and that the man was remorseful. Judge Melanie Greally granted the defendant time to arrange medication before sentencing, then imposed a three‑year sentence with the final 18 months suspended, to be finalised on Friday. The victim's impact statement described her fear, shame and ongoing psychological distress following the assault.
