Jury in trial of sports coach accused of historical abuse to resume deliberating

Summary

The jury in the trial of a 77-year-old former sports coach accused of historical abuse is to resume deliberations tomorrow. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault and not guilty to 73 other counts, including one of attempted rape, related to alleged abuse of four girls between the 1970s and 1980s. The jury has been directed to return not guilty verdicts on 33 counts relating to two complainants. The accused initially faced 29 counts of indecent assault in relation to the first complainant, with 16 of these counts being dismissed. He pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault on this complainant between May and September 1976. In relation to the second complainant, the accused denied two counts of indecent assault. He also denied 41 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape against the third complainant, with 17 of the indecent assault counts being dismissed. The accused has pleaded not guilty to one count of indecent assault against the fourth complainant.
