Man released on bail for kidnapping girlfriend later raped her and her mother, court hears
Summary
A 47‑year‑old Waterford man, previously jailed for raping his daughter, was released on bail for kidnapping and assaulting his girlfriend. He later raped his girlfriend and, days later, her 60‑year‑old mother after breaking into the mother's house and threatening her with a knife. The mother was saved when her daughter heard the assault in a voicemail left by the attacker. The man pleaded guilty to rape of both women, false imprisonment, attempted rape, aggravated burglary, threats to kill and aggravated sexual assault. He was sentenced to three and a half years for the kidnapping and faces a strong possibility of life imprisonment for the latest attacks. His defence counsel requested a determinate sentence so he could work toward a target date, but the judge adjourned finalisation until May 3. The case was heard at the Central Criminal Court.
