A Cavan man, Danny Heyneman, must serve a six-year prison sentence for attempting to murder his father before beginning a life sentence for murdering his mother in attacks of extreme violence within the family home. Mr Justice Tony Hunt ruled that the attempted murder of his father was a separate and extremely serious offence, and that the six-year sentence should be served before the life sentence for the murder of his mother. The judge noted that the most aggravating factor in the case was the breach of trust involved, as the victims were attacked in their own home, which should have been a place of safety. The court heard that the defendant had a history of depression, self-harm, and paranoid ideation, but these factors were not sufficient to explain the violence meted out to his parents. The judge acknowledged the defendant's remorse but said it was a very small drop in a very large ocean of damage and destruction. Danny Heyneman pleaded guilty.
