Finding
Summary
The jury in the longest-running familial abuse trial in the history of the State has found one man guilty of two counts of raping his deaf niece. The 48-year-old defendant, referred to as Accused B, was convicted of two counts of rape on two occasions between 2008 and 2014. The jury is still deliberating on two further counts against him, as well as 16 additional charges against the other five defendants. The trial, which began last October, involves six men aged between 33 and 55, who face a combined total of 20 charges, including 16 related to the main complainant, who is deaf. The abuse is alleged to have occurred over a 19-year period between 1995 and 2014. The trial has seen some charges withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions, but the jury is continuing its deliberations. The court heard that the defendant admitted to gardaĆ that he had sex with his niece when she was in her early 20s, and the jury found him guilty of two counts of rape at her grandparents' house. The unnamed 48-year-old pleaded not guilty.
