Jury begins deliberations after seven-month familial abuse trial
Summary
The jury in one of the longest-running trials in the history of the State has retired to consider its verdicts following seven months of evidence in which it was alleged that six men sexually abused three members of their own family. Ms Justice Caroline Biggs told the remaining 12 jurors that they could take as much time as they need in their deliberations. The 13th remaining juror was discharged today as per the law following a random draw. Two jurors were previously discharged for personal reasons during the course of the trial at the Central Criminal Court. The enlarged panel was sworn due to concerns that not all jurors would be able to see the matter through to the end. The six men on trial, aged between 33 and 55, face a combined total of 20 charges – 16 of which pertain to the main complainant, who is deaf. They are her three uncles and her three younger brothers. The abuse is alleged to have occurred over a 19-year period between 1995 and 2014.
