59-year-old man jailed for rape of pregnant woman
Summary
A 59‑year‑old Laois man was sentenced to seven and a half years' imprisonment for anally raping a 34‑year‑old pregnant woman at her home on 10 October 2010. The Central Criminal Court jury found him guilty after a five‑day trial in December 2010. The victim, who was 16 weeks pregnant, reported that the assault left her devastated, with ongoing flashbacks, anxiety, depression and nightmares. She had been treated in a sexual assault unit and had made a complaint to Gardaí. The judge, Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy, noted the victim's pregnancy had been "blighted" by the assault and imposed the sentence back‑dated to the man's December 2010 arrest.
