Summary

A 16‑year‑old orphan was sentenced to three years' detention after he was caught with jewellery stolen from a 90‑year‑old woman during a "terrifying" raid. The victim had been awakened by a man pointing a knife at her, demanding money, and then taking her watch and rings. Gardaí found the teenager hiding under a duvet with the stolen items and, after he whispered to his uncle where he had left them, the jewellery was recovered and returned. The teenager pleaded guilty to handling stolen jewellery on 6 April 2015. He had 10 prior convictions, including a nine‑year sentence for an aggravated burglary in Wicklow, of which five years were suspended. The judge noted his disadvantaged background and, recognising his youth and high IQ, imposed a three‑year term with the suspended portion intended to encourage rehabilitation.
